When people get married, it’s quite common to hear them testify to the immaturity and sin patterns they have discovered on the other side of the honeymoon. While they had assumed themselves to be fairly mature prior to marriage, they were stunned to learn differently afterward. In the past, when I’ve heard such words, I’ve wondered if single adults feel the sting of both being solitary and consigned to immaturity. But in recent years, I’ve come to understand there’s one area we can cultivate right now for greater spiritual maturity–one that, I presume, would also be a blessing in any future marriages. That would be a commitment to biblical conflict resolution. As singles, it’s easy for us to simply avoid each other or run away when the conflict is not easily resolved. I think that’s the revelation of marriage: I can’t run away any longer. I am in a covenant relationship with my spouse and I must deal with this conflict to make this marriage work. But we should have the same mindset as singles. There are important relationships in our lives, too: family members, church members, long-time friends, pastors, bosses, etc. We should be sowing toward faithfulness, charitable judgments (or thinking the best about others), humility, and perseverance in those relationships, too. True biblical conflict resolution is not just a set of skills, a listening technique, or a set of Scriptures to be recited to one another. It is all of that and much, much more. There’s no way I can unpack this in a blog post, so I’m going to urge, urge, urge you to read Ken Sande’s book, The Peacemaker. I am sure most of us have never thought of conflict as something to steward for God’s glory. But it is! Unbelievers are watching us to see if we really do love one another, if we truly believe peacemakers are the blessed ones, and if the Gospel does have a transforming effect on our lives.

The Corinthian Greeks were well known for their litigiousness. – Their trials were held in the general marketplace where anyone could join in. – The apostle Paul, who wrote this letter to the Corinthians, was not against secular courts when he chastised the Corinthian church members for going to court against one another. He himself once appealed to the court of Caesar. – The point is that secular courts cannot bring about reconciliation. The problem is in the church–they were doing nothing to solve these conflicts. – As believers, our goal in any conflict should not be to win, but to be reconciled to each other. With unbelievers, our goal should be to introduce the kingdom of Christ. – A question we should be asking ourselves: “In this conflict, how can I, in my words and attitude, demonstrate that I am a forgiven sinner?” These brief notes do not do this message any justice. But I hope they will inspire you to listen. With the holidays upon us, there’s ample opportunity for fresh conflict as expectations are dashed, schedules are crammed, and budgets are drained. These resources–the book and the message–can help you navigate conflict this year with an entirely different view and experience a truly merry Christmas.

This is just an introduction if you will, to explain the concept of what I am trying to put out there on this vast network of computers linked together called the internet. The show will surround issues of physical and mental health.

What do I mean you say? Well, as I mentioned before, one of my goals for this site (and radio show) is to provide an outlet for relief from the pains of both physical and mental (relationships) alot of us “boomers” now find ourselves faced with. As I journey into this next phase of my life I am meeting lots of people who are just out of, or have been a part of a very bad marriage or relationship. At this point I am compelled to share something with you from TD Jakes:

There are people who can walk away from you. And hear me when I tell you this!
When people can walk away from you: let them walk.
I don’t want you to try to talk another person into
staying with you, loving you, calling you, caring about
you, coming to see you, staying attached to you. I mean
hang up the phone.
When people can walk away from you let them walk. Your
destiny is never tied to anybody that left.

The Bible said that, they came out from us that it might
be made manifest that they were not for us. For had they
been of us, no doubt they would have continued with us.

…end

The focus of this online community and radio show will be emotional/mental and physical healing, so for today, let’s focus on one aspect.

Let’s face it, as a man I could never tell you what it is like to give birth, but I have heard it can be both painful and beautiful at the same time. I can, however, give you an expert synopsis on the pain, sorrow and recovery from a broken marriage and bad relationships. As I do my research, I am discovering that unless one has gone through this (broken marriage and bad relationships) one may not fully understand or appreciate the measure of pain and sorrow people experience in these situations. Further, as I interact with boomers who have been through such, one thing stands out 100% of the time. Talking things out helps. Finding forums to share thoughts and emotions is very important. Allow yourself to be sad. Cry, sob, and scream if you need. One day you will find that you feel slightly better, and in days to come the feelings will diminish even more. Eventually, the thought of your “ex” will not generate such strong feelings.

How can we make sense of it all?

I have found that everyone has a different way of handling the heartache of a breakup. Healing after the loss of love may happen—and usually does in time—but usually not by seeking it. A painful breakup, I found, offers an opportunity for you to heal this and other wounds, becoming stronger and healthier in the midst of your suffering. However, not everyone makes use of this opportunity for self-transformation, but instead may carry painful baggage into the next relationship, or simply retreat from relationships altogether. What matters in the healing process is your ability to make sense of what has happened to you. …more to come

I would like to ask those of you who will actually bless me by becoming a part of the maturation of this blog and radio show to do something for me. I recently saw the movie “Crash”. There was a part in the movie when one of the characters, Terrence Howard, was faced with a life and death, “how do I protect my woman” situation. I won’t say anymore in case you have not seen the movie. Now, I am very serious about this question. What or how would you have expected your man or husband to react to what the officer (hint) did? I often ponder just how that should have turned out… It was deep! I want to hear both gender perspectives. Also, if you’d like to be on this or a future panel discussion…chuckie@chuckiedaniel.com.
