To All The Kids BORN IN THE 1930′s 40′s, 50′s, 60′s and 70′s !!
on May 7th, 2009 at 3:05 amFirst, we survived being born to mothers who smoked and/or drank while they carried us.
They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing, tuna from a can, and didn’t get tested for diabetes.
Then after that trauma, our baby cribs were covered with bright colored lead-based paints.
We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cabinets and when we rode our bikes, we had no helmets, not to mention, the risks we took hitchhiking.
As children, we would ride in cars with no seat belts or air bags.
Riding in the back of a pick up on a warm day was always a special treat.
We drank water from the garden hose and NOT from a bottle.
We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and NO ONE actually died from this.
We ate cupcakes, white bread and real butter and drank soda pop with sugar in it, but we weren’t overweight because……
WE WERE ALWAYS OUTSIDE PLAYING!!
We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on.
No one was able to reach us all day. And we were O.K.
We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then ride down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into the bushes a few times, we learned to solve the problem.
We did not have Playstations, Nintendo’s, X-boxes, no video games at all, no 99 channels on cable, no video tape movies, no surround sound, no cell phones, no personal computers, no Internet or Internet chat rooms……….WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them!
We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no
lawsuits from these accidents.
We ate worms and mud pies made from dirt, and the worms did not live in us forever.
We were given BB guns for our 10th birthdays,
made up games with sticks and tennis balls and although we were told it would happen, we did not put out very many eyes.
We rode bikes or walked to a friend’s house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just yelled for them!
Little League had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn’t had to learn to deal with disappointment. Imagine that!!
The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law!
This generation has produced some of the best risk-takers, problem solvers and inventors ever!
The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas.
We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned
HOW TO DEAL WITH IT ALL!
And YOU are one of them!
CONGRATULATIONS!
You might want to share this with others who have had the luck to grow up as kids, before the lawyers and the government regulated our lives for our own good. And while you are at it, forward it to your kids so they will know how brave their parents were.
Kind of makes you want to run through the house with scissors, doesn’t it?!
My Dearest Chuckie,
How fond I am of your Life Train and how much I’m enjoying your words and thoughts and inspirations.
I needed this so much today and it feels like I needed it more than ever to escape my world of employment and the games that women play. That is why I don’t have girl friends. I mean where you go shopping together and lunch and movies and talk on the phone at home.
You know what I mean.
Women like to play games and I just don’t like playing games. And sometimes I allow myself to get sucked in by my own anger and it makes the situation worse.
So, I have lots of ladies out side of my office in this military world but we all are so busy but we talk when we can, and try to inspire and then get back to it because each of the real ladies here that are part of the deeper understanding of it all share our own private stuff about our co-workers that we must endure.
I know that this seems like such a small thing but I’ve spent most of my military time where the men out number the women and things go much more smoothly. I don’t know why just 3 or more women working together can cause a lot of issues. Just look at the problems at any Church and you will understand what I mean.
So, Chuckie thank you for giving me hope and joy and laughter and the best escape to get back on track. Surly God is with me but some times I need to snap the rubber band on my wrist and get back in line.
For You Chuckie*****
Our Absurdities
Whoever humbles himself as this little child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. Matthew 18:4
Once we re-read the Gospels, watching for Christ’s wit, we find it everywhere. “can one blind man be guide to another blind man? Surely they will both fall into the ditch together” (matt. 15:14).
Thus if we will read them carefully, the Gospels give us a picture of a Christ who would not let people be unobservant about life, about the actions of others, or most of all, about themselves. He wanted them awakened at every level of their being. And so He used every weapon of language and thought and communication to achieve His goals. Most effective were banter, the humorous thrust and sardonic comments about those who put on airs and think more highly of themselves than they should. As one of sound and balanced mind, He could not observe humankind and fail to see our incongruities and absurdities. He does see, and He laughs along with us.
I would love to meet you someday and just shake your hand or give you a hug.
Blessings for this website chuckiedaniel.com
